Bharatiya Janata Party leader Yogi Adityanath is the current Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Adityanath, also the Mahant (chief priest) of the Gorakhnath Math, Gorakhpur, has been sitting at the helm of state affairs since 2017 when the saffron party stormed to power with a brute majority, dethroning then ruling Samajwadi Party. In this election, the BJP has fielded him from the Gorakhpur Sadar seat. He is running for MLA for the first time. Adityanath was sworn in as the Chief Minister of the country's most populous state on March 19 in 2017. He was then a member of Lok Sabha, representing the Gorakhpur constituency. He won from Gorakhpur constituency in every Lok Sabha election held since 1998 before being given the responsibility to lead a state where politics mostly revolved around caste and religion for decades. Under Adityanath's rule, Uttar Pradesh saw a massive infrastructure development push, a boost in economic activities and improvement in the law-and-order situation. Known for his outspoken attitude, Adityanath has been a prominent campaigner for the BJP in elections. The BJP is banking on the development works undertaken by the Adityanath government and the leader's charisma in the run-up to the high-stakes assembly polls in 2022. Adityanath in his rallies has been pitching for another term to the saffron party, highlighting that the BJP government has worked towards making UP bhrashtachar mukt, bhaya mukt, danga mukt, gaddha mukt aur andhkaar mukt (free of corruption, fear, riots, potholes and darkness) in the last five years.

Bastions of the ruling BJP, both seats were vacated after UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath and his deputy Keshav Prasad Maurya resigned to take posts in the state legislative assembly.

Speaking in the House during the Zero Hour, CM Adityanath pointed toward the opposition and said everybody knew who gave patronage to criminals.
SP secretary Rajendra Chaudhary said the state government was creating an atmosphere that there has been a complete turnaround in Uttar Pradesh's investment scenario after the BJP came into power.
"When we said let's conduct a cheating-free exam (then) 10 lakhs students dropped out. This is the figure until now. I don't know what will happen in future," Adityanath said.
Earlier speaking to reporters in Lucknow, Adityanath had said, "The opposition leaders' ... rude, unparliamentary, indecorous and indecent behaviour... is despicable."
Addressing a public gathering, Yogi Adityanath attacked the Congress, the SP and the BSP for allegedly exploiting and dividing voters through caste politics and appeasement to suit their needs.
Justice B K Narayana dismissed the petition filed by Rasheed Khan, at whose instance an FIR was registered against Adityanath and others at police station Kotwali Gorakhpur, against the Sessions Court verdict.
“Our government is committed to provide security to each and every citizen. Anarchy has no place in the state,” Chief Minister Adityanath said, his first comments on the clashes.
According to police, some unidentified people hurled stones at a motorcycle rally taken out by volunteers of VHP and ABVP on the Mathura-Bareilly highway.
Adityanath has long been advocating to free the state from the “politics of caste and appeasement” which he claimed had been rampant during the last 15 years.
Stressing the need for quality education, the UP CM expressed disappointment over the fact that the country was not able to utilise energy of those “misguided” in ‘rashtra nirman’ (nation building).

Lashing out at the filmmaker, Yogi Adityanath had said that Sanjay Leela Bhansali was "habitual of playing with public sentiments".
Adityanath said that had the Congress laid more emphasis on development, Amethi would not have languished.
Addressing the crowd in his bastion on the last of three-day celebrations, Adityanath said that opposition leaders are victim of misapprehension and that the people of Gorakhpur have organised the event at its fullest.
PM Modi, in an apparent reference to the recent heated exchanges between Karnataka CM and Yogi Adityanath on the microblogging site Twitter, jeered Siddaramaiah saying "Yogi has defeated many with his skills".
"Our ISRO scientists have made us proud yet again. ISRO today created a century in satellite launching. Farmers, fishermen & scientists of the nation will be helped in getting ground details with this success", the PM tweeted.
